How Industry Works

The world’s demand for energy will continue to rise sharply, but the supplies to meet that demand are increasingly difficult to find and expensive. While alternatives become scalable, environmentally and cost-competitive, oil and natural gas will remain an important part of our energy supply.

The International Energy Agency predicts the global demand for energy is expected to increase 47% by 2035 as economies in both developed and emerging countries continue to grow and standards of living improve. All sources of energy, developed responsibly, will be needed to meet growth in global demand.

What does this mean for Alberta?

The growing importance of oil and gas globally is an opportunity for Alberta and Canada to establish itself as the premier producer of responsible energy – perhaps a responsible energy superpower. With our abundant natural resources, innovative and caring people, we are well-positioned to deliver responsible energy that contributes to our economic and social goals.

Through direct and indirect employment opportunities, royalties, land purchases and taxes paid to government the oil and gas industry supplies Alberta with the economic fuel and income needed to provide our province with the exceptional services we all enjoy.

Oil and gas currently:

  • Directly employs 140,000 Albertans
  • Represents 25% of value on Toronto Stock Exchange

The energy produced in Alberta also heats homes and buildings, generates electricity and manufactures a variety of products, including lubricants, waxes, plastics, synthetic rubber and asphalt.
