Alberta's energy industry provides a safe and secure source of energy to meet the growing global demand. Alberta’s energy resources increasingly will be expected to play a larger role in meeting North American energy demand for the next 20-50 years as other energy sources decline. The industry creates economic benefits for the province and Canada and strives constantly to improve operations and reduce its environmental impact.
Our industry takes a balanced approach to energy and environmental policy. It encourages an honest conversation about energy options and costs, enables trade relationships, collaborates on technology development and raises the profile on energy conservation and efficiency.
When asked what Canadians across all jurisdictions and political affiliations expect of the oil and gas industry, about 75 per cent said that they want the oil sands to be developed responsibly, with a focus on efforts to limit environmental impacts. They also expressed confidence that this industry has the capital, science, technology, talent and entrepreneurial spirit needed to meet the challenges and achieve these goals.
Over the last three years, the energy industry in Alberta has paid $59 billion to the provincial government through royalties and taxes. In turn, the government puts this money into provincial social services and infrastructure, supporting the high quality of life and standard of living we enjoy in Alberta.
