Investing in Albertans

Patrick Danis spends a lot of time thinking about the oil and gas industry. An investment advisor with Edward Jones in Rocky Mountain House, Danis not only follows and invests in many energy stocks for his clients, but many of those same clients work in the oil patch in west central Alberta.

The oil and gas sector is the major employer in and around Rocky Mountain House, and it has helped the town grow more than 10 per cent in ten years to about 7,200 people with a trading area of 20,000 more.

As the population in the area and his client list grows, Danis still likes to do business the old fashioned way.

“Nothing beats a one-on-one meeting with a handshake to get to know someone and establish a business relationship,” he says.

“I like to meet with my clients face to face, and the clients like it too. Most of them are the type of people who like to see who they do business with, and build trust in that person,” he says.

Danis strives to provide quality solutions and investments to serious, long-term investors, and the energy sector plays a very important role in those portfolios. “The investment and planning industry is greatly affected by what happens in the energy sector,” he says.

“Furthermore,” he says, “every Albertan, whether they’re in the stock market or not, is affected by the health of the energy industry in the province.”

“The oil and gas industry has a very broad reach in Alberta's growth prospects, both through the infrastructure that supports the industry and also the financial gain received from its successes,” says Danis.

A strong energy sector in Alberta will lead to continued positive growth for the province, and the country. “Alberta has a lot to offer the world in terms of business and financial prospects,” he says.

“Canada is fast becoming a country that many other economies see as a thriving and ‘business ready’ place to be, and as an Albertan, I feel we have the right people and opportunities in the energy industry to capture and thrive in a province ready for growth.”

He says Alberta is still thought of as the ”wild west” to a certain degree because of the province’s strong entrepreneurial spirit and the tremendous individual and collective drive to succeed in the province. “Many successful businesses in Alberta were started by ambitious, driven, yet everyday individuals, like you and me, who have a competitive nature and a desire to achieve their dreams,” says Danis.

“I expect, like everyone else in Alberta, the opportunity to take an idea and run with it. To have a population open to new ideas and successful ways of growing Alberta's economy so that everyone can experience the rewards.”
