It will take more than blowing snow and freezing temperatures to keep Canada’s oil and gas industry from embracing spring. From May 3rd to May 31st, 2011, nearly 600 students from 10 schools across western Canada will participate in Energy in Action. This unique program of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) has been delivering the message of energy literacy and environmental stewardship since 2004.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) released its Report of the Dialogues on the Oil Sands: Engaging Canadians and Americans. The report is the result of CAPP’s oil sands dialogues outreach program that took oil sands CEOs and the association to eight cities in Canada and the United States for discussions with more than 160 key stakeholders.

Most Americans strongly value Canada’s role as a secure, stable, and friendly supplier of oil to meet the needs of American families and businesses. Their already strong support for this relationship becomes stronger still when they learn about the jobs Canadian oil creates in America. These are among the highlights of a poll conducted by Harris Interactive for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Outwardly, the financial health of the Canadian oil and gas industry looks positive over the next five years, says Peter Tertzakian, Chief Energy Economist of ARC Financial Corp. (ARC), “But aches, pains and vulnerabilities are still to be found beneath the collective veneer of multi-billion dollar financial statements – on the natural gas side of the industry, for example,” Tertzakian said. “And the potential for economic trauma always looms large in this acutely capital-intense, competitive business.”

The Alberta Enterprise Group is calling for reforms to Alberta’s labour laws to preserve and enhance Alberta’s investment and business development climate while upholding the collective bargaining rights of workers.

Alberta’s role as an energy leader will be front and centre at a gathering of Canadian and U.S. regional economic and government decision-makers in Washington state this week.
With Alberta’s competitiveness as a focus, more than 130 officials representing employers, industry associations, labour and professional organizations, educators and government are gathering October 27 in Edmonton to plan Alberta’s future workforce.

"With natural gas prices looking weak for years to come, the petroleum service sector is looking to the oilsands. Larger operators like Precision Drilling Corp. and Nabors Canada Ltd. say in situ oilsands projects already represent 10-15 per cent of their total workload, and they expect that portion to increase as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) projects ramp up. The In Situ Oil Sands Alliance (IOSA) refers to non-mining bitumen activity as "drillable oilsands" because producers rely on many of the same services that are used in the conventional sector."

As of September 29, 2010, Alberta provincial oil and gas land sales of $117 million brings the total sales for the calendar year to $1.86 billion, which is more than any other year in history. This surpasses the previous record of $1.83 billion set in 2005.

Alberta’s Tory government is crediting changes to its royalty regime for eclipsing a record in oil and gas land sales. Premier Ed Stelmach’s government sold petroleum and gas rights worth $117 million on Wednesday, bringing to total sales for 2010 so far to $1.86 billion. That surpasses the previous record of $1.83 set in 2005.
